What is counselling and how can it help?

  • Counselling can help those whose health and enjoyment of life is affected by personal problems.
  • People come for counselling for a variety of different reasons and during the sessions you will be encouraged to explore various aspects of your life, and the feelings and thoughts connected with them, in a way that is not always possible with friends or family.
  • You may be aware of repeating patterns of behaviour that are affecting your wellbeing.
  • You may have to adjust to a loss such as a bereavement, divorce, or redundancy. Such situations can cause anxiety, stress, and loss of personal confidence and self-esteem.
  • If you are a carer of someone who is unwell because of mental health issues it is often difficult to make sense of your own thoughts and feelings  when you are focussing on the person being caring for, which can lead to  feelings of guilt when thinking about your own needs.
  • You may find that past issues and childhood experiences have links with things that cause difficulties in the present.
  • Understanding these, their origin and the unconscious effect they have on you can improve how you cope with your life.
  • The counsellor neither judges nor offers advice but listens to how you describe your world in an in-depth and constructive way.
